The two vehicles involved in a car crash off the California coast are both fire fighters.
Both were responding to an emergency call from a California Highway Patrol (CHP) helicopter, said Battalion Chief Dan Riddle.
The CHP helicopter reported that a two-door Jeep Cherokee, with its front bumper ripped off, was traveling at more than 90 miles per hour (145 kilometers per hour) when it ran into the side of a fire truck.
The firefighters were able to free the two occupants from the Jeep, which was badly damaged.
Riddle said that firefighters are looking into whether they were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
A CHP spokesman said that they received a call from an elderly woman who said she had been involved in an accident that occurred on Highway 535 between Santa Rosa and the town of Santa Ana, near where the crash happened.
The elderly woman said she and her daughter had been driving to a doctor’s appointment.
The helicopter was following a fire engine, which Riddle described as a yellow and orange vehicle.
It is believed the fire engine was responding to a call when the Jeep ran into it.
The fire department said in a statement that the fire trucks driver was uninjured.
